Social Emotional Learning in PE

As a physical education teacher, I teach students about self-regulation skills every day. In class, I teach students new physical skills and how to form healthy connections with their peers to complete specific tasks. I also teach students different self-management skills and how to build positive relationships. We use our MindUp curriculum for different breathing exercises after our lessons to reset and refocus our students before leaving the gymnasium.

As a Dean of Students, I use Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and work very closely with my School Support team, which includes our school counselors and administration. As a Dean, I take a proactive approach and focus on building relationships with students, parents, and teachers to help bridge the gap between why students might be demonstrating specific behaviors. During a crisis, I will work with our school counselors to de-escalate a situation and whoever has the best relationship with that student will take the lead. We then build relationships with their parents and connect them with resources.
