Gymnasium Grant for Renovation
During the 2018-2019 school year I attended City Council District 19 meetings. I learned about the process for getting our school on the Participatory Budget. The Participatory budget allows communities the ability to directly decide how to spend a part of the public budget. With my school administration's support and the support of my co-teachers and school community, I was able to put together a proposal for a $400,000 gymnasium renovation. I organized a community event where families were invited into the gymnasium to come mini golf with their students during the week of voting. We had a phenomenal turnout and were able to earn enough votes to get the funding for the renovation! Our city council member Paul Vallone came to our school during the week of voting, he also visited after we secured the funding! We celebrated our win as a community by having a special event at our school where the students were able to duct tape the physical education teachersto the gymnasium wall!
